Brasília (The Times Groupe)- Authorities in northeastern Brazil have reported 126 deaths from landslides and floods caused by heavy rains since May 25.

Humberto Freire, the director of the Pernambuco Social Defense, said search and rescue efforts were nearing the end and efforts to locate the missing were intensifying.
In 27 cities, 9,302 people have been displaced from their homes and are staying in 111 shelters.
Additionally, 31 cities have declared a state of emergency as 51 cities across the state were affected by the heavy rains.
Heavy rains that have been occurring in Pernambuco since last week have caused landslides and floods in various parts of the state.
