Ankara (Times Of Ocean)- Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Kyriakos Mitsotakis discussed mutual, regional benefits of increasing cooperation between the two countries, according to Turkey’s Communications Directorate.

During their meeting on Sunday, the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis agreed to improve bilateral relations and to focus on a positive agenda, according to the Turkish Communications Directorate.

The two leaders discussed a number of regional and global issues during the meeting, including geopolitical issues and repercussions of Russian attacks on Ukraine, the directorate said in a statement.

The meeting stressed that Turkiye and Greece have a special responsibility in Europe’s security architecture, which has now changed due to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the statement said.

In addition to focusing on the benefits of increasing cooperation between the two countries, both sides discussed the benefits of regional integration.

Despite disagreements between the two countries, the two leaders also agreed to improve bilateral relations and to keep communication channels open.

During the meeting, the steps needed to reach the $10 billion bilateral trade volume were also discussed.

Announcing Turkey’s determination to open a new chapter in bilateral relations, Erdogan told Mitsotakis that he believes progress can be made on Aegean Sea-related issues, the fight against terrorism, and illegal migration.

The issues can be resolved through honest and sincere dialogue between two neighboring countries, and not only in times of crisis, said the president of Turkey.

Mitsotakis earlier attended a service at the Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Istanbul.

At the Greek consulate, he also met with Patriarch Bartholomew before flying back to Athens. Ankara
