Abu Dhabi (The Times Groupe)- Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has been elected president of the United Arab Emirates a day after his death.
State-run news agency WAM reported that Sheikh Mohamed was elected by the Federal Supreme Council after years of leading from behind the scenes while his half-brother President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was ailing.
The decision was made during a meeting of the seven sheikhdoms’ rulers of the UAE. Sheikh Khalifa died on Friday at the age of 73.
After the decision, Mohamed expressed appreciation for the “precious trust” members of the council placed in him after his election, according to WAM.
Among the country’s sheikhdoms, which include Dubai, the vote was unanimous.
Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, said on Twitter that he congratulated him and pledged allegiance to him. God willing, he leads the whole country on the path of glory and honour.”
